Personal Support Worker (PSW)
This training program is for individuals wishing to enter
the health care field as Personal Support Workers and provide health
care in community settings or long term care facilities.
This program includes
modules on Individuality of the Person, Role of the Worker, Interpersonal
Skills, Safety, Assisting with Mobility, Assisting a Person with Personal
Hygiene, Abuse, Providing Optimal Support / Care Planning, Assisting
the Family,Assisting a Person to Manage Ongoing Conditions, Household
Management and Meal Preparation, Assisting a Person with Medications,
Assisting the Person who is Dying and Cognitive Impairment and Mental
Health Issues
Program Overview:
- 345 hours of in-class instruction
- 365 hours of clinical workplace experience (Facility and Community)
- 6 senior secondary school credits (three Grade 11 and two Grade 12)
- Upon successful completion of all components, students will receive
acknowledgement of certification from the Ontario Long Term Care Association.
- ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory at all sessions. Lateness
is unacceptable.
- TUITION: Free - Ministry of Education covers the cost of instruction
- FEE: $600 fee covers the cost of textbooks, uniform, pin & certificate,
academic counseling, job fair; and is payable in full at the time of
acceptance into the program.
Admission Requirements:
All applicants must:
- Be able to commute to classes and clinical placements
- Have the fitness level necessary to complete clinical workplace experience
- lifting is required
- Possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent or nineteen
years of age or older
- Show proof of landed immigrant status or citizenship.
- Obtain an OESC ID card along with a written police report which is
required for their co-op sessions – consent forms can be obtained
at St. Louis in Kitchener or Cambridge. Please see new procedure guidelines for police checks
- Complete a 16 hour CPR – Level HCP/First Aid training program
and/or provide proof of certification prior to undertaking community
placement
- Attend the orientation session where they will write a literacy test
and complete an interview with an instructor.

Class Times:
- Full Time Day Program in Kitchener / Cambridge / Fergus, 8:30 to 3:00 pm daily Monday to Friday.
(clinical starts as early as 6 am)
- Part Time Day Program in Kitchener / Guelph, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. (clinical starts as early as 6 am)
- (Part – Time remove this) Evening Program in Kitchener / Cambridge / Fergus, 5:30 to 10:30 pm Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday (clinical starts at 2:00 pm or 3:00)
- Community clinical hours are variable – must be flexible
Program Length:
- 710 hours including 345 in class hours and 365 clinical workplace experience.
