Something NEW Every Day!

Summer Expedition is a 9-day interactive learning journey for students currently enrolled in or going into Gr. 7 & 8 in September.  Spend some time this summer finding alternative, fun, engaging experiential activities, infused with lessons in literacy and numeracy, to help them prepare for the next grade level. Summer Expedition will give them confidence, create new excitement about learning, and fill some of the learning gaps.  This “expedition” will be a journey in small class-sizes, by grade level, with the particular purpose of being ready for the next grade!  Some may be strong in Math and need help in language or the other way around OR need help in BOTH! Blended learning that challenges both sides of the brain creates balance

Enhance your child’s learning in fun ways using:

Coding: Using scratch, lego, or robotic kits — Grade appropriate activities will enhance the learning in this area

STEM Olympics: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math can be challenging at the Intermediate grades. Help your child achieve success blending math and sport, experimentation and problem-solving skills, following blueprints etc

Writer’s Craft: Telling a story can be done in SO MANY ways! Tap into your creative expression while working in pairs or small groups.

Escape Rooms for the Classroom: Find your way OUT! Use cooperation skills, solve problems, understand figurative language.

Nuts & Bolts: Build it and they will come, drop or fly. Learn the hands-on math behind trajectories, construction, sports and games and puzzles

MathLibs: a little twist on old favourite game.  Have a blast finding out that math can be both serious and silly.

Google Expeditions: Explore and tell others about the world you see. Recreate the virtual world into a story yet to be told!

As part of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board’s values, creating success for each and a place for all,  SUMMER EXPEDITION is a literacy and numeracy support program for students currently attending Grades 6, 7 and 8 classes and entering Grades 7, 8 and 9 in Fall of 2019.

Students who may participate may be attending ANY school within Waterloo Region and has an OEN# (Ontario Enrolment Number, a 9-digit number found on your child’s current or past report cards).  Unfortunately, students who currently attend a private school or are homeschooled would not qualify to participate.

Ask yourself:

  1. Would my child benefit from added instructional support at their grade level (Have they shown Level 1 or 2 in some areas of their progress reports)?
  2. Has your child’s day school teacher or principal recommended this program to be beneficial to your child?  If you are not sure, have the conversation with them.
  3. Is your child: in Grade 6 entering Grade 7 in Sept 2019 (born 2007)
  4. Is your child: in Grade 7 entering Grade 8 in Sept 2019 (born 2006)
  5. Is your child: in Grade 8 entering Grade 9 in Sept 2019 (born 2005)
